Designing a Home That Reflects Who I Am

Designing a Home That Reflects Who I Am

Your home should be more than Pinterest-perfect — it should feel like you. For a long time, I filled my space with things that looked good but meant nothing to me. Trendy shelves. Beige everything. Minimalist furniture I didn’t even like sitting on.

Eventually, I realized:
I wasn’t designing a home — I was decorating a picture.
So I started over. I began designing a home that reflects who I am, not just what I thought was "aesthetic."

Here’s how I made that shift — and how you can too.

🧭 Step 1: Ask “How Do I Want to Feel Here?”

Not what it should look like — but how you want it to feel.
Do you want calm? Creative energy? Warmth? Adventure?
Let that be your guide before colors or furniture ever come into play.

For me: I wanted my space to feel safe, expressive, and inspiring.

🎨 Step 2: Stop Copying, Start Curating

It’s tempting to replicate a Pinterest board or TikTok aesthetic. But a home that reflects you is made, not copied.

What I did:

  • I unfollowed decor trends that didn’t speak to me.

  • I started collecting art, books, and objects that had meaning — even if they didn’t “match.”

🪞 Step 3: Add Personality Through Story

The most interesting homes aren’t always the most styled — they’re the most personal.
Think:

  • A framed postcard from a special trip

  • A lamp your grandmother gave you

  • A bookshelf filled with your favorite authors, not just what’s trendy

These things make your home feel alive — and like yours.

🛋️ Step 4: Choose Comfort Over Image

Your couch should be comfortable. Your workspace should work for you.
I once bought a sleek chair I hated sitting in — but it "looked good." I replaced it with a chair I love reading in every night.

Lesson: A home isn’t for impressing others. It’s for supporting your life.

🌱 Step 5: Let It Evolve

Your home grows with you. It doesn’t have to be “done.”
Some of the most meaningful touches in my home came slowly — a plant gifted by a friend, a print found in a random bookshop, a rug I didn’t even know I loved until it was in my space.

Allow change. Let it breathe.

✨ Final Thoughts

Designing a home that reflects who you are isn’t about rules, trends, or perfection.
It’s about listening to yourself — your comfort, your values, your style — and letting that speak through your space.

Because when your home feels like you, it doesn’t just look good.
It feels right.
